- Due to the the trench warfare which took place in the poppy fields of Flanders during World War I, poppies have become a symbol of remembrance of soldiers who have died during wartime.
- One species of poppy, Papaver somniferum, is the source of the crude drug opium which contains powerful medicinal alkaloids such as morphine and has been used since ancient times as an analgesic and narcotic medicinal and recreational drug.
- The bright scarlet color signifies a promise of resurrection after death.
- In Greek and Roman myths, poppies were used as offerings to the dead.[5] Poppies used as emblems on tombstones symbolize eternal sleep.
- Red-flowered poppy is unofficially considered the national flower of the Albanians in Albania, Kosovo and elsewhere.
